| Downloadable files | Many websites give their visitors the chance to download files ranging from music, image, information and even programmes. Infact some sitesYou can provide downloadable files from your web site. Infact if you've read the section on how to add sounds you've already done it !!! (remember sound triggered from link). There are 2 ways of creating a downloadable file (1) Simple downloadsYou can set up to download any file and it may be a useful way to provide people with the option of downloading large text files rather than displaying them on a site. - For example
- click below to go to our download page
Remember to use file types that people are likely to use (i.e. don't set a download of a rarely used word-processor file type where a simple text doc (.txt) could be used if you want as many people to use it as possible). It doesn't affect your web page download time but does effect your overall website size Begin by putting or copying your file (e.g. myfile.doc) into the web site folder. Just create hyperlink as before. Click the world wide web tab (1). ENSURE that the hyperlink type box (2) is set at either [other] or file.
Enter your file name including its file type e.g. myfile.doc (3)
THAT'S IT !!!! Problems can arise when you want things like video or images to be downloaded which will simply be displayed etc. by your browser.
The solution is to use a compressed file format so your browser can't display them. The commonest on the web being .zip files.
There are tons of freeware and shareware software that will compress and uncompress zip files for you. Check out our Download sections in links
(2) use FTPThe above is fine if you have a minimum amount of downloads or little traffic for them. However, if you are serious about downloads then ftp (file transfer protocol) is a must.
FTP can be significantly faster for transferring documents. (Its command simply deal with transfering files, no other interactions like pulling up graphics exist) However you need a special FTP server for this There are tons of FTP sites out there and some may host your files for free or for a fee. Your current ISP may even offer this service. If you visit any major company that relies on downloads for buisness or updates (e.g. Microsoft or sun microsystems), you'll see FTP server links in action
So far we've created simple links using the http (hypertext transfer protocol) protocol. Making a link to a file on a ftp server is just as easy just replace http with ftp
Just create hyperlink as before. Click the world wide web tab (1). ENSURE that the hyperlink type box (3) is set at ftp.
Enter your file name including its file type e.g. myfile.doc (3) Remember you need a special ftp server. You can't simply put a file on your normal (http server) website and change the URL of your file from say http://www.yourserver.com/file.txt to be prefixed with ftp e.g. ftp://www.yourserver.com/file.txt |
